To fix this problem, grab the clutch cable (on top of the left cylinder head), and pull back and forth to straighten the cable.

So it will be easier to replace the clutch gear, you can simply remove the back two bolts that hold the engine cover in place. (yours might look different but this is a good example of how it is done).

With those two bolts removed, there are a few other small screws on the front of the engine cover. It should slide off easily now and you will have access to the clutch gear and cable. Grab your new worn-out gear and throw it away.
